Code of Conduct

Effective Altruism Eindhoven is a network of people who are willing to help one another and collectively work towards a better world. Our members are from all walks of life and have a wide range of personal beliefs – what unites us is our desire to be more effective in how we do good. We endorse the Centre for Effective Altruism’s Guiding Principles of i) Commitment to Others, ii) Scientific Mindset, iii) Openness, iv) Integrity, and v) Collaborative Spirit. This code of conduct aims to foster a respectful, inclusive, and empowering environment while incorporating these principles.

This is not an exhaustive list of things that you cannot do. Rather, take it in the spirit in which it’s intended - a guide to make it easier to enrich all of us and the communities in which we participate. This code of conduct applies to all spaces managed by EA Eindhoven. This includes in-person events, online spaces, and any forum which the community uses for communication. In addition, violations of this code outside these spaces may affect a person's ability to participate within them.

Respect and Inclusion

  1. We value empathy, patience, and respect in all interactions. Disagreements should be handled constructively, without resorting to personal attacks or offensive behavior.

  2. We embrace diversity and recognize that individuals may interpret communication and behavior differently. We encourage members to be conscious and considerate of others' feelings.

  3. Please give each other the benefit of explaining behavior you find offensive or unwelcome. However, this should not serve as an excuse for insensitive or inappropriate behavior, and people asked to stop any prohibited conduct are expected to comply immediately.

  4. Harassment in any form, including discriminatory jokes or language, hate speech, sexual language or imagery, unwelcome sexual attention, and personal insults, is strictly prohibited. Advocating for such behavior is not acceptable.

Inclusive Community

  1. We strive to build a culture of coordinated empowerment, where helping and supporting each other is encouraged as a means to do good.

  2. We recognize that the long-term impact of our actions surpasses short-term outcomes. We discourage shame and guilt as motivators and instead encourage sustainable and positive approaches to doing good.

  3. We encourage healthy, cooperative discussions about different causes, career choices, degrees, and life situations. No one should feel inferior due to a difference in opinion or personal circumstances.

  4. We value open-mindedness and humility in addressing effective altruism issues. We encourage respectful disagreements while appreciating diverse perspectives and learning from each other.

Reporting and Accountability

  1. If anyone witnesses or experiences behavior that violates this code of conduct, we strongly encourage reporting it. Complaints will be treated confidentially, and appropriate actions will be taken to address the situation.

  2. If you would like to report the incident, you are in control and have options:

    1. You can contact the board members of EA Eindhoven. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can set up a call with one or multiple of them to discuss your concern.

    2. If you prefer to remain anonymous you can fill in our anonymous feedback form and any information you share will be read by the EA Eindhoven board members. Please be aware that because this is an anonymous form, we won’t be able to respond personally to these submissions.

    3. You can also contact the Community Health team at the Centre for Effective Altruism by using this form.

By adhering to this code of conduct, we foster an environment where all members of Effective Altruism Eindhoven can collaborate, learn, and contribute effectively towards our shared goal of making the world a better place.
